In tandem with the tone of the Sun Valley Wellness Festival, is the May/June exhibition by DAVID KIMBALL ANDERSON.  "Blue Sky: The Space Between Thoughts" represents the fleeting moment wherein the potential for suspending one's self-centeredness is most available.  Anderson uses a forthright minimalistic style in three bodies of work that direct the viewer to tune into the space: Offering Boxes (Benevolence),  Little Village (Beauty), and Bodh Gaya (Awakening) showcase sculptures in bronze and steel and watercolor paintings.  The centerpiece of the exhibit is a Buddha hand that is 4 feet in length.

Joining in the celebration are Marie Manuchehri, speaker at the Wellness Festival, with a signing of her book "Intuitive Self-Healing" and the book's illustrator, Susan Russell Hall with drawings as illustrated in Manucherhi's book and a body of floral "energy" drawings of carbon graphite on paper.

The artist reception will be during the gallery walk 26 May from 5:00-8:00, and the book signing... (more)

As we all remember, over 1 year ago a devastating tsunami hit northern Japan

Sacred Pine shortly after the Tsunami hit.

following a 9.0 earthquake. The coastal city of Rikuzentakata was almost completely flattened in the devastation, and nearly 2,000 of its residents were killed. One symbol of hope emerged from the mass of wreckage, a lone pine, formerly part of the Takata-Matsubara forest which had included almost 70,000 trees. Since then, the tree has begun to fail, as salt water from the tsunami has overwhelmed its system. However, this symbol of hope will be everlasting in Don and Era Farnworth's "Sacred Pine" print.

Sacred Pine at night

The Farnsworths, moved by the turmoil in Japan and inspired by the tree's significance, created a print specifically for Japanese Tsunami relief. They began their composition of Sacred Pine with the only likeness they could find of the tree: a blurry, low-resolution still from an online news video. The image evolved into what you see now - a beautiful tale... (more)

Each "Khor-Lo" by Catherine Eaton Skinner carries the symbolism of the mandala into the everyday world of patterns: graffiti, old walls and sidewalks, fish baskets, manhole covers and even the sides of old train cars.  The found objects adorning these encaustic paintings have been carefully chosen from Skinner's collecting drawers.

Khor lo is Tibetan for circle, wheel or spiral. Dkyil’khor literally means concentric circles from the center to the periphery, and so becomes mandala.  The mandala simplifies chaos and complexity, unifying many elements into one pattern of existence.  The central point is the axis mundi, the point of emptiness, the midpoint of self.  Outward from the center are the four walls, encompassing the external world.  These four directions of life, balanced around the center, may represent the four elements: water, earth, air and fire.  The four directions also represent the life qualities of us as living beings: our feelings, emotions, body and mind.... Boom Chick - Shake Can Well from Live & Breathing on Vimeo.

Friday night loft party. Summer heat. Youth gather for connection & reverberation. Close your eyes. Forget what year it is. The song is telling a story. Someone is grabbing you, swaying step in step. Tremelo swirls. You are on the floor, kissing. Melodies & emotions rise & fall. Surf breeze & a desert moon. Animal eyes sparkle in the midnight forest. You feel the beat of the big drum through the floor. Your friends help you up, you are dancing again. Boom Chick is Frank Hoier on guitar & vocals and Moselle Spiller on drums. Formed in Brooklyn, NY Sept 2009, their sound is a reflection of their ecstatic love for early American rock & roll, surf guitar, early country music & Delta blues.

Old Death Whisper is a cocktail of dirty western roots music and country tinged parlor tunes that spike raw rebellion into the veins of American music with the dust of the Idaho back roads.

ODW loves good old country and folk music of early America. Sea shanties, spaghetti westerns, railroad songs, road movies, pulp, noir, punk and rock and roll are among some of their influences. With 4 song writers in the band and each one taking their turn on the mic, the tunes have diversity and yet a common thread of the love for this kind of music. Whether it’s plugged in or broken down and acoustic; the live shows are full of piss and vinegar. Keeping their sound grounded in the roots of western American music, Old Death Whisper lets their sound drift into widescreen sonic voyages, down dusty trails, dirty back roads and seedy dive bars.

From the beginning of their time together, this core trio has been profoundly influenced by the culture and music of the south and, specifically, New Orleans.  Since they first got serious about the band a yearly pilgrimage to the New Orleans Jazz Fest to bond over late nights jam sessions and bellies full of beer of crawfish has been practically mandatory.  “A lot of serious band decisions have been made on our yearly Jazz Fest visit,” said Low who considers the New Orleans style of drumming to be at the core of his playing due to years studying under the legendary Crescent City drummer Stanton Moore of Galactic and Garage A Trois.  For the last two years The Fox Street All Stars have had the honor of not only headlining the official Galactic After Show Party, but also of having Moore sit-in with them for several numbers.  The New Orleans vibe is a big part of what fuels the bands energy day in and day out…

Hotel Chelsea has one amazing talent: pushing the boundaries of what a four piece band can do with a simple pop punk song. The band sprinkles its three-to-five chords with insidiously infectious guitar leads that punctuate their rhythm guitar riffs and vocals perfectly. Armed with a sardonic sense of humor and an armful of unlikely pop culture references, Hotel Chelsea has updated the ’90s pop punk recipe to include modern ingredients (e.g., swap out coffee for well whiskey) in order to feed an increasingly cynical audience.

Check them out Live @Whiskey Jacques' Thursday, March 22nd.  Band starts at 10PM. $5 bucks at the door

Spring skiing is in full swing at Grand Targhee and the lifts stayed opened until 5!  It was so refreshing to be at a resort that was so stoked about  the corn skiing that they stayed open an extra hour to let people enjoy the amazing conditions.  This season The Ghee has received over 350 inches of snow and has over a 100 inches base.

Skiing at the Ghee is a soulful experience and one of friendliest you'll find.  This past weekend I was lucky enough to stay slope-side. What a deluxe experience to wake up and everything is right there. You don't have to drive - simply go to Snorkles for a great breakfast and coffee and bam you're on the lift for some freshies! Stop by the Trap bar after skiing for good food, brew and live music. Next...take a soak and rest up for more corn.

Just like living organisms, cities thrive and decline. Sometimes they even die. A new multidisciplinary project opening at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts on Friday, February 17 explores the “urban lifecycle” through visual arts exhibitions, a film, an artist talk and a free Family Day activity.

“We tend to think of cities in opposition to nature and the environment,” says Courtney Gilbert, The Center’s Curator of Visual Arts. “But when we talk about cities, we often use words that reveal that they are actually complex systems with unique cycles of growth and decline, sometimes expanding and sometimes, literally, shrinking.”

Urban Lifecycles opens at The Center, Ketchum, during Gallery Walk on Friday, February 17 from 5 to 8 pm. Enjoy a glass of wine and be among the first to see the exhibition.

Gilbert hopes the project will get people thinking about why some cities overcome cycles of decline and decay while others stagnate or wither. Are strong economies&... (more)

Meet artist CATHERINE EATON SKINNER at Friesen Gallery this Friday, 5:00-8:00, during the gallery walk.  The Exhibition, "Tashi Delek" is Tibetan for  "May All Auspicious Signs Come to This Environment".

Encaustic and mixed media, Skinner's works incorporate objects such as antique nails, bits of cloth, pottery shards, porcelain pipes, and other found objects---creating a sense of timelessness in tandem with a voice that speaks to "now."   The tone of all the works evokes the natural environment--- from majestic old trees to wrapped rocks, inviting the viewer to see not only with their eyes but to feel the connection with the earth.

This exciting exhibit, ranging in size from 10" x 10" panels 96" x 6.5" works, will be on view throughout February.  Friesen Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 10:00-6:00; Saturday 10:00-5:00; and Sunday 11:00-4:00.
