The SVO Pet of the Week is Dora. Dora is as sweet and cute as they come. However, she is very true to her breed and proved to be a bit too much for her first owner. Australian Cattle Dogs are driven, smart and athletic. They need a benevolent leader to show them the ropes as well as someone who will respect their herding instincts and keep them mentally occupied. Dora has already shown that she likes to herd, so we are recommending a home that has had herding dog experience as well as a home without small children. She is incredibly smart, sweet, and eager to learn. We believe she could become an exceptional family member. Dora is a spayed female medium size Australian Cattle Dog born around May 2011. For More information about Dora or any of the other wonderful dogs or cats awaiting adoption at the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, please visit our website at www.animalshelterwrv.org or call 788-4351.

What is Progressive Psychobilly Folk Grass? It’s a goat chewing on a can, it’s a cat scratching at your door, it’s foot stompin’ music that makes you want to eat a biscuit. Melodies you wake up humming in the morning, and stick to your bones like peach cobbler. It’s new-timey, post-retro, pre-apocolyptic, southern Appalachian, gypsy porch swing. It’s the Billy Goats. Enjoy. Come Check Them Out @ Whiskey's Saturday Feb. 4th. Band Starts At 10PM. $5 Bucks At The Door. A new reality show highlighting the trend of sharing a vacation rental with families and friends is now airing on PBS. The show, Getting Away Together, is a part of a Vacation Rental Managers Association (VRMA) initiative to showcase the trend and raise awareness about vacation rentals as a growing alternative to hotels. The show is expected to generate great publicity for the professionally-managed vacation rental industry and the thousands of managers across the nation, including the many vacation rental management companies in Sun Valley and across Idaho. Boise-based LiveRez, the vacation rental software Gold Sponsor of the VRMA, works with more than 500 professional vacation rental manager partners from across North America and beyond – including many in Sun Valley, where the company originally took root. “This show allows America to see firsthand what staying in a vacation rental is all about,” said Tracy Lotz, founder and CEO of LiveRez, which was founded in Hailey. “With Getting Away Together, the VRMA has...
Boise’s Like a Rocket do the alt-country genre one better by ditching the often over-hyped Old West motif. The band has dubbed its sound “Southern rocking funk and alt-country.” On “8th Ave Love Poem #1,” lead singer/guitarist Speedy Gray croons about his love for a New York girl with a bluesy tone reminiscent of Mark Knopfler. It’s the kind of song you want to learn all the lyrics to so you can belt it out while you hug the stage. A catchy drum line and guitar riff melt into an addictive tune as Gray sings, “Maybe what’s wrong with me / is what’s wrong with you?” on the opening song What’s Wrong With You. The flute accompaniment on “Every Time Sweet” might catch you off guard, but you stay with the guys because they so perfectly fill their roles. The band is akin to The Animals in its early years, with a style that’s somehow classic and modern all at once.

Cash’d Out is the premier Johnny Cash tribute band in the world, bar none. Cash’d Out is the only tribute band endorsed by and linked to the official Johnny Cash website. Cash’d Out live shows respectfully reference the late, great Man in Black’s early Columbia era and Sun Records sound, combined with the energy of the classic multi-platinum live recordings from Folsom Prison and San Quentin. Bill Miller (owner of johnnycash.com and JC’s best friend for 25 years) requested Cash’d Out perform at the recent opening of the Johnny Cash Exhibit as the Fender Museum. Not a bad compliment from the man who has lived and breathed Johnny Cash since first hearing him in 1969! Not only that, they bear a striking resemblance to Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Three! Check them out @Whiskeys Febuary 1st. Band starts at 9PM. $8 Bucks at the door.

Past students have used their awards to attend some of the country’s top music, dance and visual arts summer programs and to take private art or music lessons. The three kinds of scholarships awarded to students are: Ezra Pound Award For a high school junior to pursue visual art study during the summer prior to his or her senior year. Last year’s recipient used the award money to attend a pre-college program at the Ringling...
One of the most important books of the decade, Reza Aslan’s bestselling No god but God: The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam is that rare thing: a book about religion that’s actually fun to read. It also has its share of critics, some of whom complain that the book sacrifices accuracy for the sake of political correctness. Join Josh Udesen and other readers to discuss No god but God on Monday, February 6, two weeks before the author speaks as part of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts Lecture Series on February 23. Udesen, who teaches at the Riverstone International School in Boise, uses the book as a part of his Comparative World Religions class. He’ll guide participants in talking about the book’s history of Islam and its place in the world today. The discussion will be held at The Center, Ketchum, from 6 to 8 pm Monday, February 6. Advance registration is required; visit www.sunvalleycenter.org to register or call 726.9491 ex 10. Cost is $15 Sun Valley Center members, $25...

The SVO Pet of the Week is Harrison. Some cats are blessed with beauty and personality. Harrison is certainly one of those cats! He is as friendly as he is handsome, but there is no ego to go along with it, making him a truly wonderful kitty! Harrison is friendly with other cats and does not seem put out by dogs. We think he would make a great family pet and we're sure he would enjoy lots of attention. Because of his long coat, Harrison will require some grooming, but he doesn't seem to mind this activity one bit. If you are looking for an all around wonderful kitty, stop by and meet Harrison! For more information on Harrison or any of the other wonderful pets awaiting adoption at the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, please visit our website at www.animalshelterwrv.org or call 788-6444.

The Sun Valley Wellness Institute is pleased to announce that best-selling author and renowned brain scientist Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor will be delivering the keynote presentation to kick off the 2012 Sun Valley Wellness Festival held over Memorial Day weekend, May 25-28 in Sun Valley, Idaho. It took eight years for Dr. Taylor to successfully rebuild her brain - from the inside out. In response to the swelling and trauma of the stroke, which placed pressure on her dominant left hemisphere, the functions of her right hemisphere blossomed. She is the author of the New York Times bestselling memoir about her recovery from her stroke and the insights she gained...
